The consumer unit, or fuseboard, is the hub of your electrical system. A modern consumer unit provides a safe and secure electrical system for your home or business.

The process of installing a new consumer unit involves checking that all fuses and wiring are correct for the appliances they are connected to. All new consumer units must be metal to provide protection against fire and all circuits must be RCD protected.

I also check that the earth bonding to the mains water supply and gas meter is up to standard. This is to ensure that in the event of an electrical fault the metalwork (radiators, pipes etc.) does not become live and cause the RCD to trip.

Features of modern consumer units:

• Metal not plastic
• Every circuit is RCD protected. This means the circuit will cut out if overloaded, preventing electric shocks
• Gas and water feeds are earth-bonded
• Sealed unit
